WALKING IN LOCKDOWN
FROM 23:59 on Sunday 2nd August, 2020 Melbourne went into Stage 4 lockdown.
Restrictions included:
-
a curfew between the hours 20:00 and 05:00;
-
leaving home only for one of four essential reasons;
-
travel limited to a 5km radius;
-
a maximum time of 1 hour allowed for exercising in public places.
Within these parameters I decided to document my daily walks, using GPS mapping, sound recordings, and photographic images.
Setting a 2km radius from my home, I set out each day, walking to a point where the circumference intersected with a named road. These 91 intersection points are numbered in a clockwise direction starting at the northern most point and are referred to as as ‘sites’ in the documentation. At each site I made a 3-5 minute sound recording.
The distance covered by a single walk varied from 4.95km - 8.82km. My intention was to return each day by a different route, without retracing my steps. This was not always possible. Using MapOut (GPX app) to record these journeys, they were transferred onto a paper map, revealing the shape of each walk.
This project is still in the process of editing and completion. It aims to capture something of the felt strangeness experienced during the 2020 pandemic.
