Conceived as a community action, The Ortigia Sea Walls Project addresses issues relating to pollution and degradation of littoral spaces. Plastic water bottles, were amongst the detritus retrieved from the sea over a period of several weeks. These were taken way and filled with water, then frozen in the homes of participants. The plastic bottle casings were subsequently cut away and the ice objects (castings) returned to the site of their removal and installed on the rocks, eventually melting back into the sea. From the top of the sea walls, the action/installation drew the attention of passersby, engaging them in conversations about addressing this problem.
